Breast Implant Types — Saline, Silicone & Gummy Bear

There are four main categories of breast implants available today, each with distinct characteristics that make them better suited for different patients, body types, and aesthetic goals.

Saline Implants

Saline implants consist of a silicone outer shell filled with sterile saltwater. They are inserted empty and filled after placement, allowing a smaller incision. In the event of rupture, the saline is harmlessly absorbed by the body. Saline implants tend to feel firmer than silicone, and rippling can sometimes be visible or palpable, particularly in patients with less natural breast tissue.

Best for: Patients with adequate breast tissue, those who prefer to know immediately if a rupture has occurred, and patients comfortable with a slightly firmer feel. FDA approved age: 18+.

Silicone Gel Implants

Silicone gel implants are pre-filled with a cohesive gel that closely mimics the feel of natural breast tissue. They are consistently rated by patients as feeling more natural than saline and are less prone to rippling. The main consideration is that rupture is more difficult to detect — the gel typically stays within the shell (a 'silent rupture'), which is why the FDA recommends periodic MRI screening.

Best for: Most patients, particularly those with less natural breast tissue and those prioritizing a natural feel. FDA approved age: 22+.

Gummy Bear & Structured Implants

Gummy bear implants use a highly cohesive gel that holds its shape even if the shell is cut. They are typically teardrop-shaped (anatomical) and create a sloped profile that mimics the natural breast shape. They are firmer than standard silicone but maintain their shape over time. Because they are shaped, rotation can be a consideration.
